This is the Cretan capital, with the oldest ancient monuments and specimens from the first European civilization like Knossos. A quarter of an hour away from the town you will find the scenic Archanes worth a visit.

Where to swim

To the west: Ammoudara, Palaiokastro, Agia Pelagia, Lygaria, Mononaftis. To the east: Tobrouk, Amnissos, Chersonisos (you can stay at the Spiti studios, near the sea 2897023345), Stalida, Mallia. To the south: camping in the Tsoutsouras small caves and swimming at Keratokampos. In the Matala caves you will swim along with the caretta-caretta turtles, old timer hippies and nudists.

Don't forget

Visit the Boutaris winery (near Skalani, 731617). You will be shown around the production area and the vines and you will enjoy the wines accompanied by Cretan dishes.
