Koufonissia

Where to swim

Everything is so pure and clean here you can even swim in the port. That said, a 15 minute walk away, you can find Foinikas beach with umbrellas, sunbeds, rooms and the Hondros Kavos tavern with homemade dishes by Georgoula. Following Foinika you will find in that order: Fanos, Platia Pounta (Italida) where you can create your own sand sculpture. More to the east is the rocky windy beach of Pori. The water is a bluish green everywhere and the rock formations make the beaches look like natural pools where you can swim while gazing at the uninhabited and mysterious Keros across the waters. You can ride a boat to Kato Koufonissi where you will find even more amazing beaches.

Where to stay

While there are quite a few rooms and hotels, if you decide on visiting the island in August you should make reservations early. To name but a few: Hotel Aigaion (+30 74050-1), Keros (+30 71601), Paradise (+30 72014) just 10 meters away from the beach. Rooms: Daphne's Studios (+30 74020), Villa Maria Vekri (+30 29225).

Where to eat and drink

Most of the inhabitants are fishermen which means that there is plenty of fresh fish for you to enjoy. When you are there in July or August though you have to “book” your fish early in the morning. You will find several small taverns at the port where you can enjoy homemade meals. One of the best ouzo places on the island is Karnagio where you might want to be a little patient with the service. Neo Rementzo (+30 74203) is an old time classic above the port. At Kapetan Dimitris tavern everything smells like the sea. His fishing boat is tied at you feet. For drinks you can go to the all time classic Soroko and at the once primary school of the island, the stone walled cafe Scholeio.
